Full Description
May 1998. Earthwork survey.
Forestry Compartment High Lodge East 5020, Warren Woods:
A very damaged mound measuring 5m in diameter may be the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow. If the earthwork does represent the remains of a barrow, it has been badly damaged, perhaps by antiquarian investigators, or by later warrening activity.
See report (S1) by [1] for plan and further details.
E. Rose (NLA,) 29 May 1998.
December 2017. 'Brecks from Above' and Breckland National Mapping Programme.
A small (approximately 8m diameter), mound-like feature visible as an earthwork on imagery from a recent lidar survey (S2) may equate to the possible Bronze Age round barrow described above. It is difficult to be certain as the locational information provided in the earlier report (S1) is imprecise. The mound on the lidar is not entirely convincing as an archaeological feature, and is perhaps more likely to be of modern date. The polygon defining the extent of the site has been expanded to include both the NMP mapping (Context 2) and the original grid reference given for the location of the mound (Context 1) [2].
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 7 December 2017.
