Full Description
June 1946.
RAF air photograph shows circular earthwork comprising a bank and outer ditch totalling around 46m diameter. An entrance is evident on south flanks leading into an around 20m diameter central area with faint mark probably denoting former structure. Probable gun emplacement, with adjacent site associated.
June 1998. Visit.
Now arable, slight rise but is on a natural knoll.

September 2001.
Still extant.

A military fieldwork of unknown definite date visible on RAF aerial photographs from 1946 (S1-2). The site consists of a large multi-banked and ditched earthwork, which appears to be a gun emplacement of some sort, possibly dating to World War One to Two. The earthworks do not look particularly fresh on the 1946 aerial photographs so it is possible that it is World War One in origin. Although it is in quite close association with a World War Two underground military headquarters to the east (HER 16023). The earthworks were quite hard to interpret from the available photography. The banks, ditches and possible platforms and berms were not easy to distinguish due to the angle of shadow and clarity of the images. Unfortunately post-1946 the site is not clear on aerial photographs, due to the land being returned to arable and site being ploughed significantly. The centre of the site appears to be a circular area centred on TG 08722 4278, measuring 20.5m across. This may be a slightly raised platform, although it is hard to tell in relation to the other level surfaces. The outer edge of this area appears to be defined by a 1.5m wide bank. A causeway from the road to the south adjoins this area. This site has been interpreted as a gun emplacement, so it is likely that a structure or gun position would have stood in this area. A wide ditch, measuring between 3.5-4.5m surrounds this central area. A 2m wide bank then surrounds this to the west. To the east the bank is much more varied in width, measuring up to 6.5m in places. Two sunken areas appear to have been cut into this bank. At TG 0873 4279, an elongated pit measuring 5.5m by 2m is visible, this looks like it may have originally had a structure within it. Another sunken area is located at TG 0873 4277, measuring 10m by 2.5m. To the east of these features is another larger sunken area, approximately 3-4m wide, although it widens to a 8.5m in two places. At TG 0873 4280 and TG 0874 4278 this ditch widens into two circular areas. These may have been further gun positions. An outer bank, 2m across, encloses these sunken areas. These sunken features to not continue around the entire circumference of the site. To the west a berm, 4m wide, lies between the inner and outer banks.
