Summary

Three Roman brooches have been found by metal detectorists. Two date to the 1st century AD and the third is 2nd century AD in date.

1998. Metal detecting.
Part of an enamelled umbonate Roman plate brooch (compare to (S1) 1064 and 1065). It was originally circular with a low hollow boss at the centre and a wide flange around. Three edge knobs survive. There were probably 6 knobs and 2 loops around the edge originally. The boss has a central knob with 6 petal shapes around, all filled with orange enamel. There is a groove around, then the flange decorated with semi-ovals filled alternately with blue and orange enamel. The pin lug and catchplate are missing.

Find at TF 9408 1794.
Found close to previously recovered Roman brooch. Another rather worn dolphin, similar to (S1) 888. Wings open at back for missing spring mechanism: rear-facing hook now missing. Wings incomplete, but moulded and grooved vertically: bow has vertical ornament with central transverse ribbing. Old break. 1st century AD.
