Summary

Excavations were carried out in 1977, 1997 and 2002 on a vacant plot of land on St George's Street, between the former Red Lion pub and the Norwich School of Art and Design. Evidence of two phases of land reclamation was seen. The first phase was probably associated with the construction of St George's Street bridge in the mid 12th century, the second with the construction of the adjacent Dominican (Blackfriars) Friary in the early 14th century. Between the two phases a pit was dug, possibly used for industrial purposes before being used for rubbish disposal.
