Full Description
1977. An area 3m x 1.5m was excavated by M. Atkin (NCM) with further observation over an area 8m x 5m during the course of commercial development.
The concrete floor was removed and clearance of 20-30cm below this.
The site had been stripped almost to natural sand in the 17th century.
The medieval deposits had therefore been destroyed, but a number of small pits and possible post holes of 11th/12th century date were recovered together with a large vertical sided pit at least 1m deep, extent unknown.
This type of large pit is almost invariably found in Late Saxon/Early medieval contexts throughout Norwich.
The site appeared to have been cleared in the 17th century and a thin chalk yard surface laid down.
This lay almost directly over 11th/12th century contexts.
What medieval or late medieval/Trans pottery there was was residual in later contexts.
Finds held by NCM.
For further details see file NCM.
