Summary

An evaluation excavation was carried out in advance of redevelopment in 1998. The work revealed that the entire site had formerly been low-lying and wet. Massive dumping of industrial waste in the medieval period helped reclaim the area along the street frontage. Substantial houses were erected on further consolidation layers from the 15th century onwards. Medieval buildings with flint walls later gave way to brick-built houses or were extended in brick in the early post medieval period. The built-up area grew, extending west to the river by the 18th century, but the site was cleared after many buildings were destroyed by bombing in 1942. Finds recovered during the work included Late Saxon, medieval and post medieval pottery fragments.
