NHER 26515 (Monument record) - Late Saxon to post medieval occupation at The Oasis, Fye Bridge/Fishergate

1999. Excavation and Watching Brief.
Archaeological work in advance of new pumping station. The excavation took place within a circular concrete caisson which formed the walls of the proposed water tanks. The Watching Brief monitored the installation of linkage pipes and other groundworks.
This work produced evidence of human activity on the north bank of the river of Late Saxon/Anglo-Scandinavian date (10th to 11th century). A post-built timber structure dated to this phase.
Medieval activity in the form of pitting was interspersed by periods of reclamation by dumped material, probably to combat rising river water levels. Evidence suggests industrail and/or craft activity took place nearby though the area was probably always peripheral to main settlement in the early medieval period.
Timber piles were recovered from the north side of Fyebridge that probably originate from a causeway predating the stone bridge. Unfortunately dendrochronological work failed to establish a date for its construction.
