Summary

A watching brief on construction work on two water pipes noted a number of medieval pottery sherds and much cattle bone and horn cores. It is possible that this area may have been a butchery, tannery or honers' industry area.

Map

1999. April-June. Watching Brief.
Maintained during diversion of a foul sewer in Eastbourne Place and Prince of Wales Road. Two areas observed. A shaft at the junction of Rose Lane and Eastbourne Place produced much cattle bone and horn cores, possibly butchery, tannery or honers' waste. Late medieval pottery found in spoil dumps may not have come from this site. A section of trench was also observed down side of Eastbourne Place but only modern make-up deposits were observed.
See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2).
