Full Description
January-April 1997. Systematic Fieldwalking and Metal-detecting Survey.
Field survey on proposed route of Bacton to Great Yarmouth pipeline (Field/Location RDX 7.3).
This work recorded a small concentration of 16 burnt flints and a few struck flints in the northwest end of the field, including a probable Bronze Age scraper. One sherd of medieval pottery, a sherd of post medieval pottery, a post medieval coin, and a fragment of a post medieval bell or vessel rim were also recovered.
See report (S1) for further details.
The archive associated with this work has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2011.55 and NWHCM : 2017.395).

November 1998. Systematic Fieldwalking Survey.
Additional field survey on proposed route of Bacton to Great Yarmouth pipeline (Field/Location RDX 7.3; Site 1).
This area was selected for further, more detailed fieldwalking but cropping regimes prevented access.
See report (S2) for further details.

March-May 1999. Excavation.
Excavation on route of Bacton to Great Yarmouth pipeline (Site 1S).
Excavation recorded a circular post-built structure towards the southern end of the site which has been dated to the Mid-Late Bronze Age. Very few example of Bronze Age structures have been recorded in East Anglia. This structure consisted of a circular arrangement of post holes, with further small pits and post holes arranged intermittently around the exterior (some of which may represent re-builds) and a possible northeast entrance indicated by three larger, flat-bottomed post holes. Middle to Late Bronze Age pottery was recovered from four of the surrounding pits or post holes, one feature containing 39 sherds from three incomplete vessels. One further pit or post hole located approximately 5m to the northeast of the structure also contained a large quantity of Middle to Late Bronze Age pottery. A small quantity of worked flint was also recovered from the site, including flakes, a core, and burnt flint. The flint material could not be closely dated, but would not be out of character for a Mid to Late Bronze Age assemblage.
Excavation continued to the north of this field, into RDX 7.2, but remains were limited to an undated ditch and a pose medieval ditch. See NHER 33958 for details.
See publication draft (S4) and assessment report (S5) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S6).
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2011.55 and NWHCM : 2017.395).
