November 1998. Systematic Fieldwalking Survey.
Additional field survey on proposed route of Bacton to Great Yarmouth pipeline (Field/Location RDX 30.7; Site 8)
This area was selected for further, more detailed fieldwalking but cropping regimes prevented access.
See report (S2) for further details.
H. Hamilton (NLA), 3 June 2008.
March-May 1999. Excavation.
Excavation on route of Bacton to Great Yarmouth pipeline (Site 8E).
Five ditches were excavated with three sharing the same alignment as previously observed cropmarks. Two of the ditches contained post-medieval brick/tile. A more substantial ditch conatined a sherd of Roman pottery and four pieces of struck flint including a scraper. This feature was later cut by two ditches probably of post-medieval date. A small irregular feature in the north-east corner of the site contained burnt clay and charcoal and the sand into which it was cut was also scorched. It may be a tree hole that was later re-used as a fire pit or represent a tree stump deliberately burnt out during field clearance.
See publication draft (S3) and assessment report (S4) for further details.
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2011.55 and NWHCM : 2017.395).
S. Howard (NLA), 3 February 2010. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 12 May 2019.
