Map

Feb 1946. RAF aerial photograph.
Shows a sub-circular ditched enclosure with a missing northeast quadrant, cut by road. Central depression is noted. Approx 80m diameter.

October 1998. Site Visit.
Seen from road as land is STANTA. West of road, rough grassland enables curving ditch 2/3 metres wide to be seen, with slightly higher interior (about 0.5m) particularly noticeable from the north where enclosure appears on low natural knoll. East of road is bracken and scattered trees and scrub with feature not readily seen. Road is not on Faden, although the line is a hundred boundary, but is shown on Bryant (1826) and Ordnance Survey 1st Edition 1in map. Possibly prehistoric but needs further investigation.
B. Cushion (NLA) 2 November 1998.

Despite the prepondereance of pingoes in this area, examination of the photograph suggests that this is not one.
E. Rose (NLA) 13 November 1998.

December 2001. Woodland Earthwork Rapid Identification Survey.
Wyrley's Belt. Management Unit H, Site 71:
This an updated description of the site, originally described only from air photography and from inspection from the public road.
An incomplete ring ditch, about 40m in diameter straddling the road on a raised area, one of several natural undulations in the vicinity. The section West of the road is complete, comprising a narrow ditch, up to 2m wide and 0.3m deep with a slight internal bank up to 0.2m high. The interior level is 0.4m higher than the land to the west.
Within the woodland east of the road, the southern arm continues the arc until cut short by a narrow east-west ditch, of no obvious function, a few metres short of the boundary bank. A shallow south-facing scarp links the northern edge of the ditch to the bank.
The northeastern arc is not defined as a ditch, it appearing to correspond to a gentle northeast facing slope. The interior of this segment has a natural looking depression which the road may have truncated, as well as a smaller about 6m x 7m sub-rectangular depression to its northeast.
The present road was not shown on Faden, but is on early 19th century and subsequent mapping, indicating that the feature is at latest of 18th century date. Its function remains unclear.
See report (S1) for further details.
B. Cushion (NLA) February 2002. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 12 May 2015.

March 2010. Norfolk NMP.
The earthworks of a circular enclosure of unknown, but possible prehistoric date, are visible on aerial photographs on Thorpe Great Heath (S1-S2). The enclosure is centred on TL 8853 8959. The enclosure is defined by an inner bank, 2.5-3.5m wide and an outer ditch, 2-3m wide, and measures 91.5m in total diameter. The earthworks of the northeastern quadrant of the enclosure are not visible. The aerial photographs suggest that the inner bank earthwork was previously more pronounced than has subsequently been recorded on the ground. As stated above, this enclosure is cut by a road that is at least eighteen century in date. It is worth noting that no relict or mapped trackways lead to this enclosure, as are apparent with the nearby medieval to post medieval enclosures (NHER 50426), which could suggest that this is not the remains of medieval to post medieval stock enclosure or sheep fold. It is considered more likely that this enclosure relates to a later Bronze Age to Iron Age date enclosed settlement site.
