Summary

A magnetometer survey in 1998 prior to the laying of a gas pipeline recorded a number of small anomalies which may represent small pits. They were situated along 90m of the pipeline route in this area, on the approximate location of a former field boundary, and no date for them was suggested. No archaeologically significant features were identified during the laying of the pipe, although a small number of prehistoric worked flints were recovered (including a Mesolithic tranchet axe).

Map

May 1998. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometry survey on route of proposed pipeline (Site 7).
Anomalies were identified which could represent small pits, but which were too weak to be interpreted with any confidence. It was thought possible that the susceptibility effect of this field could be natural because the pipeline route here crosses a gravel deposit, and the field adjoins a gravel quarry to the east.

April-July 1999. Archaeological Excavation and Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of Brisley to Bushy Common Pipeline (Plot 11).
No archaeologically significant features were identified in this field. A small number of unstratified finds were recovered, the majority of which were prehistoric worked flints. These flints included a Mesolithic tranchet axe, a Late Mesolithic or Neolithic flake and a Neolithic/Bronze Age scraper and three flakes.
