November 1998. Metal Detecting.
Thimble, presumably made largely of silver, but with some copper corrosion at the top.
Probably made in 2 parts, a vertical split shows where the side seam was - with the top including copper for extra strength.
The rim is straight with two grooves enclosing a wide uninscribed strip. Above, the sides and top have widely spaced neat square indentations. The sides also have interlacing strapwork, again very neatly done, and end in a plain band bordered by grooves. The top has a plain centre engraved with 'EI' (maker or owner). Mid 17th century.
Retained for treasure. Disclaimed August 1999.
Identified by H. M. Geake (A&E).
A. Rogerson (NLA) 29 December 1998.
