Summary

Extensive metal detecting in this area during the period 1999-2003 recovered a huge number of artefacts. Finds included prehistoric pot boilers, a Late Saxon ingot, a Roman Dolphin brooch, an unusual Early Saxon silver wrist clasp, a possible Roman figurine fragment, a Late Iron Age toggle, an Early Saxon brooch and a Roman coin blank.

H. M. Geake (NCM) identified: Roman Dolphin brooch. The wings are curved in section, open at the back to hold the spring (now missing). In the centre is a rear-facing hook (now broken). The wings are undecorated, but the bow has two median grooves which spring from either side of the central hook. They run down to a plain pointed foot which has a catchplate on the reverse.

Roman wing-and-fanbow brooch of Humped type, ends of wing, spring, pin and part of catchplate missing. Very close to Hattatt no. 1483, but single groove along long sides of fanbow. Tinned/silvered. 1st century.

Possible Roman unidentified object. Sub-rectangular (4.5 x 3.5mm) section rod, broken at one end just past a right angled turn. The other end curled into a circular loop, with the section becoming more rounded and with a great degree of wear at one point.
