Full Description
July 1946 RAF aerial photograph (S1) shows cropmark of incomplete enclosure as U-shaped feature with one arm extending as different form of mark to cross roads at Dead Mans Grave.
Height OD. 34 m.
B. Cushion (NLA), 9 June 1999.
November 2004. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of an apparently medieval to post medieval double ditched enclosure and field boundaries are visible on aerial photographs (S1-2). These central grid reference of these cropmarks has been adjusted from TG 3065 3220 to TG 3052 3226. The main enclosure is trapezoidal in shape and measures up to 226m long by 125m wide. It has a further, partly enclosed, area to its north extending it for another 100m. Apparently cutting across the end of the ditches of this enclosure at TG 3048 3250 was a small sub-rectangular enclosure cropmark. The majority of the main enclosure and its northern extension are defined by an intermittent double ditch, which sometimes appears as a single, wide cropmark. One of the outer ditched bends towards the southwest and continues for 60m, suggesting another adjacent enclosure was present in this direction. A parallel ditch cropmark may have been a subdivision of this enclosure. Two single ditch cropmarks cross the road from the northwest towards the main enclosure, but it is not clear whether these are related or of a different date. Part of the main enclosure survived in 1827 and was marked on the Paston enclosure map (S3). At that time its northern area formed part of Heath Close. It is likely that this is a medieval or post medieval enclosure, which may have formed part of a larger enclosure complex. However, its alignment is similar to fragmentary field system and enclosure cropmarks to the northwest (NHER 39009), northeast (NHER 39017) and north (NHER 39010) of probably Roman to Saxon date raising the possibility that this enclosure has earlier origins.
