Summary

Metal-detecting at this location between 1996 and 2024 recovered Roman, ?Middle Saxon, Late Saxon, medieval, medieval/post-medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds; Roman ceramic tile fragments; undatable copper alloy casting waste; Late Iron Age, Roman, Late Saxon, medieval and post-medieval coins (including a possible Roman coin hoard and a small medieval coin hoard); medieval and post-medieval jettons; a post-medieval token; and a range of other, undatable and Late Iron Age/Roman to post-medieval metal objects. These metal finds include undatable copper alloy rings, a copper alloy nail, lead weights and fragments of lead scrap; a Late Iron Age/Roman terret; Roman brooches, finger rings, spoon fragments, cosmetic pestles, a strap end, bracelet fragment, possible buckle fragment, strap or harness fitting, strap or harness mount, key, seal box lid, patera fragment, military harness mount, possible harness mount, bust of the god mars, votive stand, possible votive axe, casket mount, pin fragment, furniture stud, copper alloy nail or furniture stud, copper alloy unidentified object and lead steelyard weight; a potentially Roman copper alloy probable pinhead, copper alloy vessel fragment and copper alloy ring; a possible Early/Middle Saxon brooch fragment; Middle Saxon pins; a Middle/Late Saxon disc brooch; a Late Saxon stirrup terminal, possible stirrup terminal and bridle cheek piece; a Late Saxon or post-medieval strap/belt mount; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; a medieval book clasp, belt or furniture mount, binding strip from casket, hilt plate or end cap from whittle-tang knife, possible box or casket mount, purse bar, barrel padlock and rotary key; potentially medieval lead spindle whorls; a medieval/post-medieval purse bar fragment, copper alloy vessel fragments (including loop handle from chafing dish) and lead disc from cloth seal; post-medieval purse bar fragments, Jew’s harps, book clasps, a coin weight, spur, bridle boss or harness mount, thimble or sewing ring, possible pinhead, copper alloy trade weight, copper alloy toy cannon, lead bale seal, lead weights, lead powder charger and silver cock spur and a potentially late post-medieval copper alloy unidentified object. The quantity of Roman pottery, coins and metal objects recovered suggests that this was the site of a settlement.

Medieval zoomorphic buckle and rotary key.
2 post-medieval buckles and a silver cock spur.

The medieval zoomorphic buckle was initially identified as a Late Saxon stirrup terminal. It was re-identified as part of a 12th-century zoomorphic buckle by A. Rogerson in April 2010 - compare examples from HER 13009, 29404, 29797, 32985, 37309, 50163 and 52777.
