Full Description
39 and 41 Market Place.
January 1951. Listed, Grade II.
Former National Provisional bank. Built as house around 1730-1740 on remains of 16th-century house. Red brick, Flemish bond, black glazed pantiles. Two storeys and dormers. Seven bays. Mid-19th-century shop front with Roman Dorix door to passage. Remainder of shop 20th century. Twelve-pane sash windows first floor. Modillion cornice. Gabled roof with gabled dormer between flat topped dormers, the right hand one is blind and painted. Internal west stack and ridge stack to right. In the passageway are roll and hollow moulded joist and wallplates around 1500. Some 18th-century panelling in house and 18th-century staircase survives at top alone.
