Full Description
October 1999. Trial Trench.
Excavation of one trial trench revealed that this area was likely open marsh until the post-medieval period, when material was dumped to raise the ground level. Although the site is located at the edge of the Iron Age and Norman earthworks (NHER 5747) on a possible projected line of the outer castle earthworks no features were recorded. The castle erthworks therefore likely did not extend this far east.
See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2).
