Map

March/April 1999. Metal detecting.
Pagan Saxon head and part of a bow from a beautiful and unusual little cruciform brooch. Both side knobs are missing and the edges of the side panels are fragmentary. The top knob survives; full-round with nicely proportioned wasist and hemispherical top. Top has one encircling groove and waist has two mouldings. Running from the base of the knob down the central panel of the head plate is the unusal feature: a long transversely ribbed projection right down to the bow. These projection are sometimes found on side knobs (used to solder them on) but are generally very short; this one is a major decorative feature. Only the flat upper part of the bow survives with facets and transverse grooves; a farily recent break. Single pin bar lug; iron on reverse.
5th century.
