Summary

The construction of a new housing estate at this location in 1999 exposed a shaft or hole. This feature was about 2m in diameter and over 4m deep and had no side tunnels leading off from it. It is possible that this was a natural feature although in light of the adjacent flint/chalk mine sites (NHER 17501 and 15111) it is quite possible this was a chalk mine burrowed from a tunnel below without reaching the surface. Documentary research also suggests that this was also the original site of the post medieval gallows.

Map

1994. Metal detecting on Abbey Homes site, Castle Street.
Early Saxon annular brooch.
See description and (S1) in file.
A. Rogerson (NLA), 30 November 2000.

12 November 1999. New housing estate under construction, northwest angle of junction of Lambert Street/Castle Street/Rampart Road. Position estimated as Lambert Street and Rampart Road are new constructions not yet on Ordnance Survey mapping.
Hole or shaft exposed. Approximately 2m diameter, at least 4m deep when seen at which time it had had one lorry-load of cement poured into it. Jagged-domed top 2m below present surface, in natural chalk; above was topsoil containing a chalk layer extending across whole site. This is probably the floor of the garage/warehouse shown on 1982 1:2500 Ordnance Survey: 1880 25in Ordnance Survey shows large detatched houses along Castle Street.
One seam of flint visible in sides of shaft. Workmen said it had been 'empty', no visible tunnels leading off base, and no access from surface.
Seen by E. Rose (NLA) who wondered if it were some sort of geological feature as there did not seem to be any way of human access. However, A. Rogerson (NLA) says that in view of adjacent flint/chalk mine sites NHER 17501, NHER 15111 etc. it is quite possible this is a chalk mine, burrowed from a tunnel below without reaching the surface.
Foreman stated that a 'much larger subsidence' had been encountered to the north which had been backfilled without it being reported, by a different developer.
E. Rose (NLA), 17 November 1999.

Documentary research suggests that this was also the original site of the gallows.
See NHER 14352 and report (S2) in that file.
D. Gurney (NLA), 19 January 2001.
