Summary

In 1999 part of a medieval/post medieval fireplace arch was found by builders digging a trench on the site of former 19th century farm buildings belonging to Kenwick Hall. It may be a fireplace from the original hall (NHER 22154) and photographs suggest a late 16th/early 17th century date.

Map

22 November 1999. Found by builders digging a trench by new housing on site of former 19th century farm buildings of Kenwick Hall at about 0.9m (3ft) deep.
Stone fragment 0.68m x 0.3m maximum, slightly arched shaped with ovolo moulding, resembling part of a fireplace arch. Lead attachments at one end.
Seen briefly by A. Rogerson (NLA) who states it does not appear 19th century or recent.
Finder connects this with the lost chapel site (NHER 14425) but this seems dubious.
It may be a fireplace form the original hall (site NHER 22154), photographs suggest a late 16th/early 17th century date but these may be misleading. But it could be a recent import to the site.
Photographs and drawing (S1) in file.
E. Rose (NLA) 8 December 1999.
