Summary

Metal detecting in 1998 recovered a Roman brooch and a medieval hooked strap fitting with an inward-looking animal-head terminal from a horse harness.

1998. Metal detecting at location [1].
Medieval probably a hooked strap fitting from a horse harness (S2). A Rectangular loop would have taken a strap 20mm side by up to 5mm thick; from the end of this comes a cast rod bending down, round and up (up further than the top of the strap loop). On the front of the hook is an integral shield-shaped plate (with no design on it). The terminal has a cross-hatched collar (like an acorn) and then an inward looking animal head. All covered with a black ?laquer or possibly a decayed white-metal coating.
