Summary

Metal-detecting at this location between 1997 and 2024 recovered two Neolithic polished flint axeheads; undatable prehistoric and Late Prehistoric flint flakes; Roman, Middle Saxon, Late Saxon, medieval, medieval/post-medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds; a Roman tegula fragment; Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins; medieval and post-medieval jettons; a post-medieval token and a range of other, Roman to post-medieval metal objects. These metal finds include a Roman brooch and decorative stud; an Early Saxon brooch; a Middle/Late Saxon zoomorphic furniture fitting; a Late Saxon stirrup-strap mount and bridle side link; a Late Saxon to post-medieval lead spindle whorl; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories (including a medieval/post-medieval silver annular brooch fragment and post-medieval silver stud or cufflink); medieval keys, harness pendants, a box fitting or harness mount, thimble, horse scabbard chape, crucifix fragment, candlestick shaft, strainer, lead weights and lead seal matrix; a potentially medieval spoon bit from auger; medieval/post-medieval coin weights, a crucifix pendant, key from box or furniture, copper alloy rings, copper alloy vessel fragments, copper alloy 'paper-clip' probable vessel repair rivet, copper alloy rectangular strip fragment from unidentified object, monumental brass fragment and lead weights; a potentially medieval/post-medieval copper alloy unidentified object and post-medieval furniture escutcheon plates, knife fragments, a copper alloy cup weight, copper alloy cauldron leg, lead window cames and lead cloth seals.

February-March 2000. Metal detecting. [5].
Medieval box fitting or harness mount, complete and consisting of a long bar which is slightly U-shaped in section. The centre is facetted with a flat top along the centre; at either end is a square panel with criss-cross grooves. Beyond these at each end is another tiny length of faceting then a transverse moulding, then a rivet hole and then a long narrow knop. These kinds of bars, but with hinge loops, are used to hold horse harness pendants, but strip-like mounts are known to have been used to decorated boxes too.
