Map

November to December 1999. Metal detecting.
?Late Saxon/early medieval D shaped copper alloy buckle frame.
The bar is circular in section and the rest of the frame is made up of a plait.
This is fairly flat, but has been angled very slightly so that one face is clearly the one designed to be seen.
This face has the addition of a short groove at the pin rest.
The plait is a conventional three-strand one.
The fact that the plait is visible on the reverse, and the deep clefts between the strands, may indicate that it was not cast to resemble a plait, but rather worked in hot bronze.
I don't know of any parallel, but the size of the buckle (46 x 33 mm) and the D shape may indicate an 11th or 12th century date.
