Map

May 1999. Stray find by [1] in his garden at 12 Heffer Close, Dereham.
We think that this object is Roman. It is flat, was originally circular (about 35mm diameter) and open work with four curving arms meeting in the centre. One arm continues beyond the circle as a long projection (overall length about 53mm), but the projection seems now to be incomplete (old break). Nearly half of the circular part is also missing (fresh breaks). There are similar ones illustrated in a book on Roman auxiliary soldiers' equipment (S1) but their function is unknown. Perhaps they were used in some way on armour of horse harness.
See (S2).
Identified by H. Geake (NCM), 30 September 1999.
K. Hinds (NLA), 31 January 2000.
