Map

June-July 1999. Metal detecting.
Identified by H.M. Geake (NCM).
Early post medieval large and gaudily decorated circular harness mount, slightly domed and with an integral rivet on reverse. The design consists of a six petalled flower with traces of inner rows of petals, within a single-line border outside which are oblique lines.
The mount is so corroded that it is hard to tell if the lines were originally relief or engraved; there seem to be wide grooves between the oblique lines and these retain traces of gilding. Between the border and the flower are traces of blue enamel. The outer petals have raised interiors with rocker-arm and gilding and between these and the second row there seems to be red enamel. The centre is too heavily corroded to be able to see the detail. The rivet is square in section and straight with a slight hammered burr on the end. Although the bright decoration is more characteristic of a Medieval piece, I feel that this is early post medieval because of the rose decoration, the integral rivet and the sturdiness of the object.
Original diameter c35mm.
A. Rogerson, 13 September 1999.
