Map

Late 1998. Metal detecting. [1].
Roman unusual hair pin, complete and in good condition. The head consists of a flattened globular top set on a hemispherical base. Both are decorated with grooves and mouldings running horizontally. The shaft is thick and taper evenly to a point (7mm diameter at the top). The peculiar thing is that it is decorated with a spiral groove which occupies the top 25mm of the shaft. This is probably not a screwthread, but served to anchor the pin in the hair. Overall length 81mm.
See Polaroid (S1).
Identified by H. M. Geake (NCM).
