Summary

Archaeological evaluation work undertaken in 1999 and 2000 in advance of construction work on the site of the former Averills Garage, revealed a number of deposits. Significant remains were recovered from the frontage of Cattle Market Street, including pits of early medieval date and high status buildings - one of them assocaited with a garderobe - dating to the later medieval or early post-medieval period. A possible ditch of very large dimensions might represent the Castle Fee ditch or other castle ditchworks. The central and southern area of the site yielded evidence of quarry pits of earlier medieval date. A single refuse pit, probable domestic, was recorded, as well as a 13th or 14th century oven. Also noted was a possible 19th or 20th century cellar, as well as a possible metalled surface, and late medieval to post-medieval deposits and linear walls.

Map

August 1999. Desk-Based Assessment.
Assessment of land at 29 Cattle Market Street in response to proposed development. The work suggested that the site had a "good archaeological potential for the early Medieval and late Medieval period", particularly as it was possible that features associated with the defences of Norwich castle were present. As a result the site was recommonded for archaeological evaluation.
See report (S1) and specification (S2) for further details.

June-July 2000. Trial Trenching. Contexts 1-393.
Evaluation trenching recorded pits and quarries of early medieval date, and late medieval or early post medieval buildings. A possible ditch may be the Castle Fee ditch or some other castle ditchwork.

April 2003. Watching Brief. Contexts 500-544.
Monitoring of excavation of foundations at the rear of Units 2, 3 and 4. Also observation of pile-proving trial holes within the building units.
These revealed modern make-up deposits and a possible 19th or 20th century cellar. Monitoring of the excavations of the northern ground beams fronting Cattle Market Street identified a possible metalled surface, late medieval to post-medieval make-up deposits and linear walls.
