Map

October to November 1999. Metal detecting.
Identified by H. M. Geake (NCM).
Medieval copper alloy seal matrix with hexagonally facetted conical handle rising to a pierced lozengiform terminal. The die is circular and 18mm in diameter, and is engraved with a hawk on top of another bird. The legend reads *ALAS IE SV PRIS (alas I am caught). I haven't heard the suggestion that the arrow points to the caught bird to indicate who is speaking before, but this legend does indeed tend to end with an arrow. This is a lover's seal. 14th century.
