Roman Headstud brooch. The head has the conventional vertical line decoration and is drilled through the reverse for an iron hinge bar, wtih a slot in the centre for the missing pin. There is an integral chain loop on the top of the head. The bow starts with a circular 'headstud', a relief circle with a cross, and below is a longitudinal recessed panel with small transverse mouldings within. These run down to a button on the foot. On the reverse is a deep catchplate, now incomplete. There does not appear to have ever been any enamel on this brooch, which is fairly small for a headstud (length 45mm). 2nd century AD.
