Full Description
Canal.
Ran from Horsey Mere (NHER 13507) to Lound Bridge brickworks (NHER 35365) though (S1) does not show the brickworks and continues in the line of the Cut up to Hempstead by a ditch. The Cut is thought to have been dug in the 1820s to take produce from farms and villages with poor road access and (presumably subsequently to serve the brickworks). Closed north of Bridge Farm in 1953.
See (S2).
E. Rose (NLA), 26 April 2000.
(S3) also does not show the brickworks, but shows the canal as on current Ordnance Survey map.
E. Rose (NLA), 6 August 2001.
There is mention on a website (S4) of a monorail operational in 1886-8 along the east side of The Cut part of which is supposedly still to be seen between Brograve Mill and the Mere beside the footpath. The "rail" visible in this area appears to be the top of more recent bank-strengthening works. See digital photos.
D. Gurney (HES), 18 June 2014.
