Full Description
The Belt.
Oldest section of house is now north wing, formerly a small house on its own. Two storeys, attic and cellar; it has a shaped north gable wtih internal stack and tie irons forming RTE 1741. Bricks have diagonal skintlings. Roof with Y windbracing; cellar with massive 17th century ovolo moulded beam (reused) and reused timber as tread of stair. No reason to question the date of 1741. The main block of the house is in Regency style around 1820, horizontal skintlings, rooms at rear supported on huge open arches. Barn goes with 1741 building, its extensions with the later block. See (S1) for the grounds but these are ungraded; states outbuildings once a tannery. Found on shelf in wine cellar by E. Rose (NLA) during inspection of house; Neolithic flint axehead; blade end of a polished axe, broken in antiquity and rechipped as a flaked axe. Max dimensions 11cm by 6cm. Does not seem to be identical to any of those recorded from the parish; may have been found by the previous owner.
E. Rose (NLA), 22 May 2000.
