Summary

An extensive brickworks with at least three kilns is shown on a map of 1884. 19th century newspaper cuttings state that the kilns resembled ships when their roofs were removed, hence the name of the site. A pub called The Ship was also named after the field, and the current Brickmakers Arms stands on part of the site. The kilns had gone by 1928 and the area is now built over.

Map

Extensive brickworks with at least three kilns shown on (S1).
19th century newspaper cuttings in (S2) state that these were updraught kilns with demountable roofs, and that when the roofs were removed the resulting outline resembled a ship, hence the name; a public house called The Ship was named after the field, not vice versa.
However the 1884 map shows square kilns (updraughts are usually round) and the Ship and Brickmakers Arms pubs, and Ship Field Road, south of the brick fields. Were the brickyards once larger therefore? Present Brickmakers Public House is further to north.
Kilns gone by 1928 and area now built over.
E. Rose (NLA), 21 August 2000.
