Summary

A group of enclosures, boundaries and a possible trackway, probably representing former settlement and land division of medieval and/or post medieval date, is visible as earthworks and, subsequently, cropmarks, on aerial photographs. They might once have represented a northern outpost of the common-edge settlement surrounding Great Melton common, depicted on Faden’s 1797 Map of Norfolk a few hundred metres to the south.

March 2010. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks described above represent a group of enclosures, boundaries and a possible trackway or embanked boundary visible as earthworks, and, subsequently, cropmarks on aerial photographs (S2)-(S4), centred at TG 1177 0540. As suggested above, these probably represent former settlement and land division of medieval and/or post medieval date, in particular the two small trapezoidal enclosures visible adjacent to Wymondham Road towards the southern end of the site. Faden’s 1797 Map of Norfolk (S5) shows Great Melton common a few hundred metres to the south. Common-edge settlement is shown extending along this side of the Wymondham Road, and it seems plausible that the earthworks recorded here formed a northern outpost of this.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 26 March 2010.
