Summary

An archaeological evaluation trench was dug behind these two properties in 2000. This revealed a sequence from the 11th/12th century. Early quarrying was followed by terracing, and the frontage was built up by the 13th/14th century. Evidence for a high status building at the west end of the plot was uncovered and took the form of a substantial garderobe. However, this grand abode was seemingly demolished to make way for the Lion and Castle Public House.
