Summary

This site was subject to various archaeological investigations in 2000-01. Initial trenching revealed Late Neolithic ditches and post holes, with flints and pottery. However, the majority of archaeological evidence dates to the Early Saxon period. Three or four sunken featured buildings were examined as were a number of post hole alignments which were interpreted as the remains of post-built halls. Again, these features were accompanied by pottery sherds dating to between the 4th and 7th centuries.

November 2000. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation in advance of proposed residential development.
An initial walkover survey was carried out followed by the excavation of six trenches, one of which was placed to investigate a possible terrace earthwork.
Revealed ditches and post-holes that were identified as prehistoric due to the recovery of Late Neolithic flints and pottery (although it should be noted that quantities recovered were actually quite small and most material was from upper fills).
See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2).
