Full Description
Whitehorse Roundabout.
Milepost dated 1822. Made for Southtown and Ipswich Turnpike. Inscribed London 122, Yarmouth 2 1/2, Southtown 1 1/2, Nelson's Monument 2 1/2, Ipswich 53, Beccles 13, Bungay 19.
Made by J. Garrett, St Margaret's Iron Foundry, Ipswich. An early example of a cast iron mile post. Moved slightly south in 1969 and welded repair at some date.
See (S1).
E. Rose (NLA), 14 November 2000.
9 July 2013.
Milestone repainted and relettered by the Milestone Society (see Notes) and, on this day, officially unveiled.
Beneath "Yarmouth" there are two panels, both horizontal, which appear to have been filed flat. If a distance was shown here, why is not in the same style / format as the others? Early photograph, yet to be traced, may show the milestone as originally lettered.
D. Gurney (HES), 10 July 2013.
