Milepost.
Dated 1818, perhaps replacing a milestone, made for the Southtown to Ipswich Turnpike Trust.
Inscribed Gorleston to London 121, Yarmouth 2, Nelsons Monument 3, Ipswich 52, Lowestoft 7.
Made by Jacob Garrett, St Margaret's Iron Foundry, Ipswich.
One of the earliest cast iron mileposts in England and also notable in view of the reference to Nelson's Monument opened in 1817, see NHER 4302.
