Summary

Extensive metal-detecting between 2000 and 2018 recovered Roman pottery sherds; Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins; medieval and post-medieval jettons and undated, Roman, Early Saxon and Late Saxon to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include undated metal-working debris and scrap, a copper alloy bar fragment, spoon bowl and copper alloy rings; an Iron Age enamelled harness fitting; Roman brooches, a figurine of Jupiter, a gold finger ring, harness fitting, key handle, padlock, snap-loop, plumb bob, ring, seal box, decorative mount or fitting, vessel repair, knopped terminal of a bar, suspension bar, ingot fragments for coin manufacture, coin blank and possible coin flan; Early Saxon brooches; Late Saxon strap-ends, a brooch and stirrup terminal; medieval and post-medieval dress accessories (including a medieval/post-medieval silver finger ring); a medieval dagger, lead pot mend, sword or dagger pommel, cauldron or pipkin fragment, ring and thimble; a medieval/post-medieval copper alloy vessel fragment and a post-medieval coin weight, thimble, possible sword belt hanger fragment, sword belt mount, casket key, lead weight, bale seal and fragment of a pewter grotesque mask or face. The Roman finds recovered suggest that this may have been a metal-working site, including the manufacture of coins.
