Summary

Excavation in the outbuildings of 'Kosikot' recovered many medieval fragments of pottery. Further investigation uncovered medieval floor layers, a ditch containing medieval pottery and two post-medieval post holes. This is evidence for medieval occupation here. During excavation of a pond in the garden part of a clay-lined cooking pit was recorded. A Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age barbed and tanged arrowhead was also recovered. In 2010, an Iron Age-Late Saxon glass bead was recovered as a stray find.

Map

2000. Field observation.
A large number of medieval pot sherds (TF9722118722) and an undated piece of lava quernstone were found by the landowner while digging a trench beneath the flooring of outbuildings of the old cottage (the cottage was destroyed by 1928). This is indicative of occupation site.
See list in file.
A. Rogerson (NLA), 3 January 2001.

2001. Excavation.
Further excavations by the landowner within the outbuildings revealed in-situ medieval contexts including postholes, a possible floor and a linear feature. Finds included Late Saxon to post-medieval pottery, animal bone, and whelk, cockle, mussel, oyster and land snail shell.
See description, plans, sections, and photographs in file.
A. Rogerson (NLA), 5 February 2002.

June 2004. Metal-detecting and Excavation.
Excavation by the landowner of a circular pit for a new pond revealed the western edge of a clay-lined feature cut into the natural gravel. This may be a cooking pit associated with a burnt mound. Finds include medieval and post-medieval pottery, a clay tobacco pipe, post-medieval brick, vessel glass, thimble, and buttons, animal bone, one oyster shell, and many calcined flints. A flint core, possibly Neolithic in date, was also found in the topsoil near the pond, and a Beaker barbed and tanged arrowhead (TF9722618724) and prehistoric flint flakes were recovered near the top of Context 5.
Medieval and post-medieval sherds.
See description, plan, section and photographs in file.
A. Rogerson (NLA), 28 September 2004.

Before 7 July 2010. Stray find.
Iron Age-Late Saxon wound glass bead.
E. Darch (NLA), 4 August 2010.

An archive associated with at least one of the phases of archaeological fieldwork at this site has now been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2018.307).
P. Watkins (HES), 10 August 2019.
