Summary

The cropmarks of an oval enclosure of an uncertain date are seen on aerial photographs. The feature may relate to the site of a possible Neolithic long barrow or mortuary enclosure. However, it is also possible that the feature could be Bronze Age to Iron Age or a possibly early medieval to medieval in date.

13 July 1993. NLA aerial photography.
Located near site of medieval village and church. Cropmark of an oval/sub-angular enclosure.
To the immediate east of the spinney is a square enclosure with co-joined linears. The area is largely masked by geology but it appears there is another enclosure (rectangular) to the far south of the spinny. Perhaps associated with NHER 7350.

November 2022. Aylsham and Brampton Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
The cropmarks of an oval enclosure (see above) of an uncertain date are seen on aerial photographs (S1-S4). From the feature's form, it is possible to suggest that the oval enclosure may relate to the site of a possible Neolithic long barrow or mortuary enclosure. However, the oval enclosure is slightly larger than other examples mapped within the project area (for example NHER 31740). Previous excavations in the area ahead of the Bacton to King's Lynn Transco pipeline (NHER 37629) recorded late Bronze Age to early Iron Age features including pits and post holes. Therefore, given the location of the cropmarks in relation to the area of excavations, a possible Bronze Age to Iron Age date for the feature may also be possible. Furthermore, the oval enclosure is located to the north (approximately 273m) of the site of St Andrews church (NHER 7350) and to the north of an area of cropmark possible medieval to post medieval boundary ditches (NHER 66260). Therefore, a later early medieval to medieval date also cannot be ruled out for the enclosure. The square enclosure discussed above (see above), was not identified as part of this project and has therefore not been mapped. The monument polygon has been updated to the extent of the oval enclosure as seen on S2-S5.
