Full Description
OF THE CROPMARKS DESCRIBED BELOW, THIS RECORD NOW RELATES ONLY TO THOSE OF A RING DITCH. THE LINEAR CROPMARKS ARE NOW RECORDED AS PART OF NHER 54659.
27 July 1995. NLA air photography (S1).
Cropmarks showing a ring ditch and a linear feature, located to the north of Kimberley railway crossing.
H. Clare (NLA), 20 April 2001.
19 June 1995. NLA air photography (S2).
Cropmark site consisiting of a ring ditch, situated to the south of which is a circular positive anomaly of a similar size and shape. Two other smaller, more irregular positive features occur to the northwest of the first. These appear to be pits of some sort. A linear feature cuts through the large pit. The single linear and the pit cluster may relate to the construction/use of the adjacent railway line.
To the north is a multiple linear feature consisting of 3 ditches and possible traces of a bank. The central ditch is wider than the outer two, and appears to have a causeway near its east end. The outer ditches have no corresponding break. The line defined by the two northernmost ditches is slightly parched, indicating the possible presence of an earthwork bank to the feature. This multiple linear earthwork/ditch would appear to represent some form of land boundary or route of movement.
S. Massey (NLA), 4 May 2001.
September 2011. Norfolk NMP.
Of the cropmarks described above, this record now relates only to those of a ring ditch. The linear cropmarks are now recorded as part of NHER 54659; the pit cropmarks have not been mapped as they are not believed to be of archaeological significance, being of relatively recent and mundane origin (small quarry or marl pits, for example).
The undated ring ditch described above is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs (S1-S4), centred at TG 0668 0386. It probably marks the site of a Bronze Age round barrow, but alternative explanations cannot be ruled out.
The ring ditch is circular in plan and measures 26.5m in diameter.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 27 September 2011.
