NHER 36106 (Cropmark and Earthwork record) - Undated ring ditch and possible enclosure

Cropmark of ring ditch with a somewhat angular appearance due to straight stretches of ditch.
Also visible are three linear ditches, two of which are parallel and are probably part of a small enclosure.

The linear ditches previously recorded under this number are now recorded under NHER 43749. The centre of the site has also been amended to that of the ring ditch from TG 4055 2334 to TG 4047 2338.

The cropmarks of a ring ditch, probably the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow, are visible on aerial photographs to the southwest of Hickling Green (S1). The round barrow would have been located just below the 5m contour, with the lower valley floor and the peat fens to the east. A second round barrow is located in a similar position approximately 650m to the north (NHER 29749). A possible Neolithic long barrow or mortuary enclosure may be visible on the aerial photographs 115m to the north (NHER 43748), although the interpretation is not definite.

The ring ditch is centred on TG 4047 2338 and measures 17m in diameter. The ditch is quite irregular and the ring is slightly sub-circular in shape. The northern arc of the ring ditch is slightly flattened and a linear ditch appears to abut up to or join the arc at this point. The linear ditch may have been dug at a later date.
