NHER 36210 (Cropmark and Earthwork record) - Undated circular ditch and mound

Mystery site.
Circular flat topped mound about 8m across surrounded by a ditch 1.5m deep and 3m wide. Outer berm 4m in width with outer bank. One tree on mound, birch 10 - 20 years old. Many wooden cable drums in ditch. Obvious on NAU aerial photographs of 1990, but hidden by scrub on 1946 RAF aerial photography. Function? possibly Home Guard explosives store (see NHER 24988), but somewhat small and no causeway. 1946 aerial photography's would surely have revealed searchlight sites etc.

A curious circular mound clearly visible on NAU photographs from June 1990 (S1). The site is comprised of a ditch with a width of up to 5m, and a maximum diameter of 20m (S1). The interior area appears as a mound and there is an outer bank several metres beyond the ditch. The site is not marked on any of the available maps which might indicate that the site was constructed some time within the 20th century. The 1939-45 war seems a likely time for construction although the site is not clearly visible on the RAF 1946 aerial photographs (S2). The site appears to already be overgrown with scrub by this date and it is only the vegetation change that appears to define the site. It may of course not actually have been constructed. One can probably make out the outline of the site from a change in the vegetation on the Ordnance Survey images (S3) and under dense mature trees on the NAU images (S4), but it may even post-date these.

Possible forestry or landscape feature or even an agricultural feature such as a stack base, but more likely to be associated with World War Two military activity.
