Summary

In 2001 an archaeological evaluation in advance of development works on this site undertook excavation that noted almost 3m of archaeological deposits. The earliest evidence of human activity dated to the Late Saxon period, represented by a beam-slot and pottery sherds dating to the 10th to 11th centuries. An early medieval pit and a clay-floored post-hole building were also noted, as well as pottery sherds from the 11th to 14th centuries. The floors and robbed walls from a 14th to 16th century building were also recorded. A substantial cellar located to the south appears to date from the late medieval period. Overlying the walled building was a series of deep tips and dumps spannign the 16th to 19th centuries. These deposits represented considerable landscaping activity. The final phases of activity on the site was the construction of 19th and 20th century buildings, which survive as footings. At the front of this site is the timber-framed structure of Nos 93 and 95, whose principal rafters date to the 16th century and are fossilised whtin the timber-frames second storey of the building, whis if of 19th century date.
