Summary

Archaeological evaluations carried out between 2000 and 2001 along the length of the road improvement area recorded several multi-period features and finds. Bronze Age and Roman post holes and pits were discovered along with evidence of an Iron Age/Roman field system. The most significant find was of a Palaeolithic handaxe, probably of ritual significance, but Iron Age coins and Roman pottery sherds were also found.

July-August 2001 and October-November 2001. Excavation.
Excavation of two areas at A11 Roudham to Attleborough Improvement Scheme Stone Cross Bridge site.
Area 2 (from context 200):
A system of Roman ditches was revealed, with pits and post-holes. One ditch had a corn-drier constructed over it, and a pit within a small square ditched enclosure that contained Roman glass, iron timber nails (with minerised wood still adhering) and a palaeolithic hand-axe. The combination of artefacts from this feature suggest it may have been a robbed or otherwise disturbed cremation burial.
Area 1.
Very few features were identified, apart from some undated post-holes, tree holes, two ditches and modern land drains.
See assessment report (S5) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S6).
Final publication awaited.
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.445).
J. Allen (NLA) 1 August 2001. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 21 April 2015 and 27 May 2019.

The palaeolithic handaxe has been mislaid, and it cannot currently be located. Unfortunately this object was lost before it could be seen by a specialist and a printout of a digital photograph (S7) is the only surviving image.
D. Gurney (NLA) 6 April 2006.
