Full Description
25 June 1996. NLA aerial photography.
There appear to be partial cropmarks of two rectilinear enclosures (in each case it is two sides of the enclosure that is visible). As well as this there are several linear features showing as cropmarks. These cropmarks are located to the west of Flag Meadow Plantation, and southwest of Upper Farm/Heydon Road Farm. The exact origin and date of all these features are unknown, but it seems likely that at least some of these linears etc. relate to old field boundaries.
H. Clare (NLA) 29 August 2001.
October 2022. Aylsham and Brampton Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
A series of linear ditch features possibly relating to boundaries and enclosures of a possible Iron Age to Roman date (see above) are seen on aerial photographs (S1-S2). The features most likely relate to a series of fragmented field boundaries and sections of a rectilinear enclosure which can be seen in the centre of the area (centred at approximately TG 1290 2821). The mapped features are on a different alignment to the modern field boundaries and the surrounding cropmark post medieval boundary ditches. The features may date to the Iron Age to Roman period, although, a later, medieval date could be possible for some of the mapped features. The features may relate to further cropmark enclosures (NHER 36407) recorded approximately 200m to the northeast. The cropmarks of post medieval boundary ditches which are also visible on the consulted sources have not been mapped as they are recorded in good detail on the readily available historic maps (such as S3). The monument polygon has been amended to the extent of the features as seen on S1-S2
