Location

Map sheet TF61NW
Civil Parish KING’S LYNN, WEST NORFOLK, NORFOLK

Map

11 December 2001. Trial Trench.
Single trench excavated on proposed development site.
Revealed a cut feature which might be part of the defensive works, although this is uncertain and it seems more likely that this is a soakaway or similar.
Early maps do show that the Civil War bastion, known to have strengthened the town wall at this point, lay to the west, possibly slightly detached from the rampart itself. Prior to the work commencing it was considered possible that the outermost part of these defences, the counterscarp or minor ditch, lay within the area of this site.
See report (S1) for further details.
D. Gurney (NLA), 6 February 2002. Amended A. Cattermole (King's Lynn UAD), 9 May 2019.
