Full Description
10 July 1996. NLA air photography. (S1).
Probable moat visible to east of Norrold's Farm.
Other linear features were visible in 1984 as earthworks, but are now ploughed flat.
M. Brennand (NLA), 26 September 2001.
February 2010. Norfolk NMP.
Several linear earthwork ditches as well as cropmarks of an undated moat or enclosure (described above) and further linear features are visible on aerial photographs (S2)-(S9) of land surrounding Norrold’s Farm, Rocklands. The moat feature is centred on TM 0012 9616. It encloses an area measuring 33m by 16m, with ditches up to 2.8m in width, and measures up to 38m by 22m externally.
The area of related earthworks and cropmarks surrounding this feature has been extended from that recorded above, as there are several linear earthworks visible to the west, although it is likely that all these features relate to post-medieval to modern drainage, as the majority appear to run east-west into a north-south drainage ditch which is marked on the tithe map of the area.
To the east of the probable moat several further linear cropmarks on a similar alignment to the moat are visible, although these may also have performed a drainage function.
A small sub-circular ring ditch is visible (S9) to the east of the south-eastern corner of the moat, measuring only 8m by 6.5m in external diameter, which suggests that does not represent a round barrow, but may be a small circular enclosure or possible domestic feature, although the internal area enclosed only measures approximately 3.9m by 3.3m.
E. Bales (NMP), 15 February 2010.
