Map

November 2001. Pillbox.
Structure of brick with concrete roof based on corrugated iron; two chambers each about 2m by 7m, dividing wall with door; both have splayed loopholes, one in end wall to northeast, the other in side wall to southeast - this one also has entrance in southwest wall. Commands low valley to east; set in hillside.
Resembles a cross between a type 2/20A and a Home Guard shelter. Possibly light machine gun post or lookout.
Local story of 'underground tunnels' is based on slight depression full of rubbish to west and seems unlikely.
Press cutting (S1) and location map (S2) in file.
E. Rose (NLA), 1 December 2001.

September 2003. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two pillbox/gun emplacement is clearly visible on Hunting Survey Ltd 1969 (S3) and Ordnance Survey 1994 (S4) aerial photographs. It can also just be determined on RAF 1946 aerial photographs (S5) and possibly on RAF 1941 aerial photographs (S6). It appears to be square in shape and is located in the current hedge line at NGR TG1688 4325.
This site is related to the larger military installation recorded under NHER 38279.
H. Clare (NMP), 24 September 2003.

December 2004. Norfolk Rapid Coastal Zone Archaeological Survey.

See assessment report (S7) for further details.
